Hey Everybody!

I'm probably getting extremely ahead of myself with this post, but i'm actually quite curious. I want to know the best courses offered at WWU, especially those that are great for freshman year.

I'm not only wondering about general awesome classes, but also the best classes to take in the realms of History, French, and of course, Theatre.

So, any general advice, teachers to avoid, classes to steer clear of or sign up for will be very much appreciated!

My fav. course I have taken

My fav. course I have taken that was not in my major was humanities of India. The class was not to big. I wouldn't say that it was easy because their is a lot of reading and comprehension that goes into it. But It covered a lot of interesting material and I generally thought it was an enriching course. Dr. Curley was the professor I had for it and he is knowledable and receptive to students.

I also enjoyed taking some of the P.E. classes because they are fun and a nice distraction from school work while actually getting a little bit of exercise.

In general though I think it is hard to say what is the best, because that is very subjective. Some students think the best means the easiest, others think it means the one with the most amusing professor, I tend to think of it as the classes I learn the most from.

Any class with Paul Bingham

Any class with Paul Bingham will be fun, interesting, and exciting. He is a debate coach and taught my communications 235 class (Debate and Argumentation). It was an amazing class, I absolutely loved it. I looked forward to his class everyday and whined when it was Friday (we didnt have class on Fridays). It was easy, fun, and very exciting.

Art 110

If you're at all interested in art history I always tell people to sign up for Art 110 with Sharon Antholt. I took that in freshman year and found it to be a fascinating overview of modern art that really showed the crazy/fun sign of art, emphasizing art and artists, not dates.

What's your interest in

What's your interest in Theater? Performing, theory, writing, or somewhere in-between?

For my buck, Patrick Dizney's one of the best lecturers in the Department at a pre-major level. His classes are huge and tend to be fairly diverse and loose.. a great place to get started, in any case.

Find a 200 level english

Find a 200 level english class taught by Tony Pritchard. You can probably find one to fulfill a GUR, and the two classes I have taken by Pritchard I absolutely had the most fun I have ever had taking an english class. He encourages creativity and the class was very thought provoking. I considered taking English as a minor so I could try to take more of his classes...

History

I LOVED History 103/104 with Dr. Richards.  He is amazing and makes the stories come to life.  The tests are essay, but you will be fine.  Believe me.  They seem like a lot of pressure, but if you like history (as I assume you do, because you asked) you will breeze right through!

Also, I did not like Tony Pritchard.  So, I guess it just depends on who you are and what qualities you like from a teacher.

Take Scottish Country

Take Scottish Country Dancing, seriously. You don't have to be that great of a dancer and it was really fun.

Thor!

Take Dinosaurs with Thor Hansen! It's Geology 303, and 101 is the only prereq.  It's a super fun class and Thor is one of the best profs I've had here.

If you're looking specifically for theatre, I would wait until next year when Gregory comes back to see if he is teaching Intro Costuming (216) or Stage Makeup (215).  They are both great electives!

classes to take

Here are my suggestions::::

General Courses:

Can-Am 200: Butch Kamena is HILARIOUS and the class is really fun. Lots of interaction, goes over Canadian history, politics, and culture and it counts as a GUR.

Philosophy 112 with Ryan Wasserman: If you are lucky enough to snag this GUR class with Wasserman DO IT. Ryan is a great professor, quite funny, uses PowerPoint presentations, and is REALLY HELPFUL in class and office hours. Do it, you'll love it.

Any Geography course taught by David Rossiter will be interesting, fun, and organized. Dave doesn't mess around when it comes to providing students with excellent content in a clear and precise manner. He's great.

I have had an exprience with Dr. Danysk in the History department. She teaches Canadian history courses only. STAY AWAY from her classes. She is overly demanding and extremely picky about the content you provide to her in essays, discussions, and exams. I'm a senior and was put through the ringer in her History 277 course. It was terrible.

Yes, take soc 269.  It's some very interesting and eye opening stuff.  Also Glenn is an excellent teacher... there's a reason he's one of our highest rated prof's on RateMyProfessor.com!!

Classes

SOC 251: Sociology of Deviant Behavior, Feinberg

THTR 201: Intro to the Cinema, Dizney

ESCI 101: Environmental Studies

Any English course with Nancy Johnson

Also, I think that MUS 105: Music in the Western World would have an amazing class if I had a different professor. If you really like Jazz, you should take it with Chuck Israels. He's a really talented guy, but Jazz isn't really my thing.
