I work for the associated students productions civil controversy office and am trying to start a discussion about what kind of events students and faculty would like to see on campus.
The Civil Controversy Speaker Series is a campus-wide lecture series with a focus on sparking civil discourse on traditionally controversial social topics. Lectures often provide opportunities for a diversified dialogue to occur over a wide range of highly politicized or particularly pressing social issues.
Just so you know, Civil Controversy was involved with the following events at Western this fall.
Understanding the Proposed Economic Policies of Obama and McCain
Opposition to America’s Leading Political Parties: Protesting the DNC and RNC
Kareem Crayton: Hopes and Fears for the 2008 Elections
A New Day for Racial Politics
Serving Up Controversy: The politics of Chick-fil-A
Rick Steves: Challenging the Prohibition of our Age
James Yee: Being a Muslim-American and the Politics of Fear
Soldiers After War
I would to hear about what you would like to see addressed on campus: issues, speakers, spoken word poets, theater performances, etc.......

I just got done writing a paper on the private contractors in Iraq. I mainly talked about Blackwater and their role in our conflitcs. For those who don't know, Blackwater is an organization that our country pays to provide security and protection in Iraq. In other words, they are mercenaries. I think it would be interesting to listen to some of these employees. Their existence brings up some interesting questions. Since this is a private firm, they are not restricted to the same rules that our troops are. They are free to do as they please which has resulted in some very serious conflicts.
How do we feel about companies like Blackwater representing us in the Middle East???
Should they have to follow the same basic rules of war like our troops?
What specifically is their role in Iraq?
There is a proposed plan for withdrawl from Iraq but this does not include the "Shadow Army" of private contractors. I feel as though these issues are important and could make for a good event.
