Title about sums it up. I'm wondering if there are any other people around who would like to get together to shoot (any discipline) either at a range or on someone's private property (with the landowner's permission), teach others about the sport and various skills that go along with it (reloading ammunition, gunsmithing, etc), and just hang out to discuss anything. I've been shooting since I wass about 8, mostly plinking, with some varmint hunting/pest control, and I tried to get into competive air rifle in high school. I've currently got a Winchester 1200 12ga. shotgun, and a Ruger Redhawk  double action revolver in .41 Magnum (I'll be learning how to handload over winter break too, so no more paying over $1/round to shoot the Redhawk).

If you're interested, post up. Feel free to share about your experience and what you've got.

I'd enjoy meeting some

I'd enjoy meeting some people who are also interested in gun and shooting.  At this time I don't own a gun because I'm not 21 but I'm looking at what I want to get for my birthday so any advice or experience would be greatly appreciated.  I too grew up with guns and have experience in shooting and I would like to work on my skills more before I start carrying.

Does anyone have experience with either the Kel-tec P-3AT or the Kel-tec P-32?  Thats what I'm currently looking at.

I personally do not have any

I personally do not have any experience with any Kel-Tec firearms, but from what I've gained through secondhand knowledge, they are supposed to be fairly good guns. I would suggest searching online for reviews, and before buying, going to a shop and handling each gun you are considering, and if you can make it to a range that rents guns, I'd try to shoot them too, to see if I like the feel. By the way, you can own a handgun at 18, you just can't purchase one from a dealer. Long guns are lots of fun too, and those are 18 to purchase...

On a seperate note, I'm looking to pick up a new rifle, and I was wondering, is $650 a good price for a DPMS Lite 16 with a Magpul CTR stock, 2 steel magazines, and 2 P-Mag polymer magazines?

Kel-Tec P3AT & Kel-Tec P32

After doing a little looking, I have come to the same conclusion as before about these two particular firearms, however I have decided that they are not for me, as I am not a fan of sub compact pistols, even for concealed carry (which I assume is your plan, I mean why else would you choose something like that?). All I can say is try before you buy, to make sure you're happy with what you get.

New rifle

So I decided to get the DPMS Panther Arms Lite 16. Just sent out the dealer's FFL and my payment on Monday. It should be here by the 20th methinks. $695 after shipping and transfer fees.

EDIT: I just got a phone call today; my AR has been shipped, and should be at the Survival Solutions by the 20th. I can't wait.

Kel-tec P-3AT or the Kel-tec P-32

I dont know about Kel-Tec they are not real popular tho. atleast not with people who i am around. I carry a S&W M&P 45 most people who carry for protection will tell you not to go bellow a 45 but if you want smaller and easier to carry get a Bersa Thunder 360 CC its a copy of the PPK about 300$ and its a good gun people who have them love them.

No matter what you do go and hold handguns and ASK questions.  I was convinced that i woulded a Glock untill i held one.  As soon as i picked up the M&P 45 i was in love.  Shoot some too if you have the option to do so.  Most gun owners will be MORE then happy to let you shoot if you buy the ammo and get them a six pack for after shooting (never durring tho)!

You can contact me on here ill probably check back or on face book check out my profile pics of my most recent deer from this year.

I just tried reloading for

I just tried reloading for the first time today. I used an old RCBS single stage press. It was cold in the shop, and it was tedious work, but I had good company and a good teacher. Came away with 100 rounds of .41 Magnum JFP too. 11 grains of AC#5 powder pushing a 210 grain jacketed flat point bullet, all lit off by a CCI 500 large pistol primer. Estimated velocity of 1250 feet per second. If the AR arrives before 10:00 Sunday, I'll be having myself one heck of a time next week.

Club status

This is not a recognized university club (yet). I started this thread to gauge interest, and to find people to shoot with, since most of the people I know in B'ham seem to be a little spooked around firearms. This could become a club though, provided there are at least 5 students interested in starting said club and we filled out the appropriate paperwork (I've done this before, as part of the WWU Paintball Club).

In other news, this weather makes me angry because it is delaying the delivery of my rifle to the dealer, so I can't get any range time with it at home, which means having to actually pay range fees somewhere in B'ham. Oh well.

I finally picked up my new

I finally picked up my new AR this afternoon. It arrived on the 24th, I just couldn't get up to B'ham from Oak Harbor to pick it up. Ever since I got it to my apartment, I can't seem to keep my hands off of it. I think its the best impulse buy I've ever made. :)

So is anyone interested in

So is anyone interested in going shooting?  I've been shooting so bad lately and I feel the need to get out of this slump.  And I also want to rent/try a Walther P99 cause I'm thinkin about getting one in a few months.

I'm down to go shooting just

I'm down to go shooting just about anytime. I just need to reload more .41 Mag for my revolver, pick up some .223 or 5.56X45NATO, and/or some shotshells. Finding a place to go would be good too, as I haven't been to any local ranges. Are you still interested in Kel-Tec firearms? I prefer the P99 to the P-3AT or P32 based on the feel, which is subjective. That is based on handling the P22 though, which is a bit smaller than the P99, but I think the larger frame would feel better in my hands.

I can't wait to try out the new carbine (I thought I'd share some pics). I've got new grips for the Redhawk too, they feel so much better and have really improved my hold. :)

I haven't been to any of the

I haven't been to any of the Bellingham ranges either since I mostly shoot with my dad and he lives down south.  As for the kel-tec I have to say I wasn't a big fan of it when I shot it.  The trigger pull was uncomfortably long and the grip was all wrong for my hands.  I even accidently dropped the mag a few times when firing it.  I thought with such small hands it'd be a good size but I guess not. It was almost too small.  I got to hold the Walther at my local shop and it felt good, but who knows how it'll feel when fireing, thats the real test.  But from what I've read, I think I'll like it.  I'll look into finding a decent range around here.

There are two ranges nearby

There are two ranges nearby that I know of, Plantation, which is public, and the Bellingham Gun Club's range, which I know very little about. Plantation has rentals, but the club's range does not. I haven't been to either of these ranges, but they are the closest ones (unless we shoot on someone's property).

I go to plantation on

I go to plantation on occasion for their indoor range. It is a very nice range, motorized target holders, clean, good ventilation, seems like a good safety crew. If anyone wants to go, let me know!

Kesselring's

I've been to quite a few ranges in WA state and I really like Kesselring's the best...it's the big one down in Burlington.  Real cool place with access to a lot of great guns.

Also, my buddies and I hang out probably four nights a week and three-quarters of the conversation is hunting/fishing/gun/tackle related.  We're always open to new folks; even if its just a game of pool down at the quarterback.

I think that it may be time to go ahead and set up a meeting somewhere, and maybe apply for AS club status. What do you all think?

Local shooting club

http://www.custersportsmensclub.com   (there's an issue with java on the website right now. I'll let someone know about it this evening.)

If Custer doesn't offer your type of shooting, I'd be surprised. We offer a whole lot more than Plantation. (sorry, the indoor range is only open to winter league Bullseye, Rimfire Rifle league, youth instructional sessions and other special events due to heating and electricity costs)

If anyone is interested in learning how to shoot Bullseye, let me know. If you're interested in a tour of the club and what it has to offer, let me know.

Bullseye is an extreme challenge.  http://www.bullseyepistol.com

There are covered outdoor bays for pistol and rifle disciplines. At less than $100/year for club membership, open 9am to dusk most all year.

Private land shooting in Whatcom county is tough to come by.  Shooting in the hills is really frowned upon. The road from Paradise valley on Sumas mountain has a dead end where people shoot. (You'll need 4x4 to get there this time of year) There is a pit on Anderson mountain south of Alger that many locals frequent. Please clean up your mess.

I would be interested in getting to know more about this proposed club and writing an article for the Western Front about it.  If you guys would be interested in talking to me, let me know.  You can reply to this thread or send me an email at bennett4@cc.wwu.edu .   My intent is not to harass or criticize at all.  I think it would be great to get some interviews with you guys and see what the whole club would be about and to get an update on how much progress you guys have made in getting the club started.

To be honest, I just threw this topic out there to find like minded people in the immediate area. In my experience, it seems that most people in the area are either anti-gun, or apathetic to the idea of firearms ownership and their recreational value. I would like to see this develop as an official club for any students interested in recreational or practical shooting, and as a group who could educate the people on gun ownership, in order to dispel any stigma against guns, as well as to help support or oppose any legislation that would affect the rights of citizens. I imagine this as a group who would go out on trips to the range, share their knowledge, and explore the current legal issues surrounding gun ownership, as well as to just socialize.

So far, I have only attempted to gauge the interest in forming such a group, and as of yet, there has been no attempt to get the paperwork done in order to actually found a student club. I would be open to an interview however, as it may help to increase public interest.

In other news, I just got 280 rounds of .223, so I can finally get some trigger time with the new AR, and I will be doing more reloading over President's Day weekend.

Concealed Carry

Hey everyone, I've been doin some looking around for a good website that had good info on concealed carry, like what states accept the Washington CWP since packing.org has been taken down and I thought I'd share the site I found incase anyone else was curious.  The site I found to be most helpful was www.carryconcealed.net   I understand there is also a House Bill that is trying to get it so that all states must accept other states CWP's  so we'll see what happens.

hey everyone, so I've been

hey everyone, so I've been following this thread, and I'm definitely interested. I've got a 12gauge back home that I usually go skeet shooting with, but I'm really interested in getting into handguns as well. I'm also wondering if there are any ladies besides myself that is interested?

new stuff

I think that prrentig is also a lady, but I'm not positive. Feel free to correct me if I am mistaken. You don't have to reach out exclusively to the ladies either (although I can understand the reasoning for doing so), as I, along with the other men in this thread would be more than happy to help.

In other news, I had a chance to check out the indoor range at Plantation with a pair of people from the Western Front. Seemed like a nice enough facility (although I have very little experience in this matter as I mostly shoot on my parent's land, or that of a friend's), and the rangemaster was really friendly and tried to be accomodating to our needs. I also reloaded another 100 rounds of .41 Mag today. A bit lighter load this time, only 985 FPS I think, and a hard cast lead semi-wadcutter bullet this time too. It's time for me to build a bench of my own instead of going 20 some odd miles to my friend's house to use his stuff, although it is a good time there.

I assume that since you are

I assume that since you are hunting, you are more interested in long guns rather than handguns. That said, it is a good idea to carry a sidearm when hunting in areas with particularly dangerous animals such as bears, cougars, etc. For that purpose I would reccomend at least a .357 Mag, though anything is better than nothing. Back on point, for practice with a rifle, get yourself a good .22LR first, so that you can practice cheaply, and develop proper shooting practices without so much concern as if you were using a .308 or something where felt recoil starts becoming a real concern. After you've developed your marksmanship skills, get yourself the rifle you want to hunt with, and practice with it as well, to get the feel for it. If using a shotgun, I would still practice with the .22 to develop proper habits, then get a shotgun that will suit your needs. When practicing with the shotgun, use birdshot loads that are typically on sale for about $5-6 for a box of 25. This will help you get used to the feel of your gun and allow you to practice for less than the cost of buckshot or slugs. I suggest you become proficient with a rifle before picking up a handgun too, and that before handling any firearm, you have been instructed on basic safety practices.

Plantation, along with other ranges and sportsmen's clubs frequently teach classes in safety, marksmanship, and maintenance too. A hunter's sfety course is required in Washington I believe, and if not, I would still reccomend it. Here is Plantation's course schedule: http://www.co.whatcom.wa.us/parks/range/rrclasses.jsp

I am willing to teach anyone in anything I am knowledgeable about, if anyone is interested. So you know, I am not a hunter (though I do plan on getting a bear/cougar license for the trophys and to try the meat), but the suggestions above are based on my own experience.

On second thought, I'll try the meet from someone else's hunt before I shoot my own; got to make sure I like it. I won't take one just for the trophy unless I had to.

Custer is a great range to go shooting. I actually work there doing maintenance. Do you shoot bullseye with John Urban? My roommate and i both shoot and reload. It would be great to find other people to go shooting and spend a day at the range with. I actually was thinking about forming a gun club type thing but figured it would be a no go at western. I'm certainly interested in meeting up with people to go shooting. I mostly shoot my AR and .22s.

I'm absolutely interested.  It looks like from this thread alone there are enough people to start the club.  We should meet, swap contacts, and get something started officially.

edit: someone above mentioned concealedcarry.net, I think everyone here should also look into opencarry.org.  It's a great site, about non-concealed carry, a perfecly legal way to exercise your rights.

We've got enough interest

We've got enough interest for a club, so, I agree with carhark, and think its time to get something started. If everyone is free Thursday evening, I'll go ahead and reserve a space on campus for a meeting, so we can start the paperwork and maybe make it official in a few weeks.

There was no meeting, so you didn't miss anything. Since this is, at the moment, the only way to reach everyone, I will continue to post until we can organize something else. In the meantime, I know it is dead week, and that we should be studying, but if anyone is free on Thursday evening, post up so we can throw together a meeting and get the ball rolling instead of sit around and think "wow, it sure would be cool if there was a group of people..."

My plans for the meeting

My plans for the meeting shouldn't take long. All I want to do introductions, and the filling out of the paperwork. Maybe pick a regular meeting time and put together some sort of CoC or whatever to keep things organized too. Not a whole lot there. Just show up if you can, and if you need to take off early, go for it. I will need a commitment of at least 4 people other thn myself, just to get the forms done though.

In other, probably old news since the bill (HR 45) was introduced in January, but I heard someone mention it in class and it got me a bit concerned, especially since so many thought it was a great idea. If you didn't know check it out: http://www.gunlaws.com/GunLawUpdate4-SHOTnHR45.htm

Meeting

I've picked up the paperwork to start a new club, and I've submitted a room request for a meeting. No confirmation yet, but I will keep you all posted here and via email, once I put together a list. Tentatively scheduled for tomorrow at 5:00 in VU462, but nothing solid yet, as the location might change.

As of 9:25 AM Thursday, 3/12, I have not received confirmation of my room reservation. For those of you planning to attend tonight's meeting, meet near the 6th floor info desk, and we'll just find a space.

I have received confirmation. Our first meeting will be held in VU462-B at 5:00. See you there.

Meeting Outcome

Sorry for the late update all, but I figured I should post up the results of our first meeting. Myself, prentig, and allenn8 were the only ones in attendance, meaning there wasn't enough people present to complete the required paperwork at that time. We discussed what we wanted to do with this group, and tried to complete as much of the paperwork as possible. Anyone who would like to help expedite the completion of the forms should contact me so we can arrange a time and place to meet, otherwise, I will call another meeting after spring break.

re:guns

I don't own any guns. But I need to learn to shoot properly and how to clean/load guns. As a dorm student I can't own one though...

I believe that you can own firearms, and have them accessible to you while at Western. You cannot have them in your dorm room or carry on campus, but I think you can store them with public safety/UP.

EDIT: www.wwu.edu/policies/docs/5600%20Public%20Safety/POL-U5620.01%20Firearms...

According to this, you can store firearms with the UP.

I'd be interested in signing

I'd be interested in signing up for the or to create a club.  Let me know when people plan to get together again.  I just saw this thread today otherwise I would have been there for the last attempted meeting.  It has definitely been way too long since I was last able to get out and shoot a little.  Being curious, where is everyone from?  I'm up here from the Tri-Cities.

I'll probably put together another meeting during the first full week of spring quarter, but I don't know yet. I'll be available anytime between now and then to meet and get your info though, if you'd like. To answer your question, I'm from Oak Harbor.

carry on campus

Some people above were talking about having guns on campus.  It is entirely legal to store or carry a gun on WWU's campus; HOWEVER, it violates the student code of conduct, so do not carry to campus if you want to remain a student.  WWU acts as a private business, despite federal and state subsidies, so they may tresspass you if they don't like you carrying on their property, but by law (RCW 9.41.050) there should be no legal consequences, though an ignorant law enforcment officer might still arrest you.

P.S.  I only have classes Tuesday and Thursday this quarter so those days are pretty busy, I'm good to meet on
any other day.

Meeting Wednesday

I know its been a while since I've posted here, but things have been pretty hectic since break ended, and probably won't be slowing down for about another month. Anyways, I've decided to try and get another meeting together for Wednesday, 4/15. Since the online room reservation thing is a pain in the ass to use, I've decided to fly by the seat of the pants on this one, so anyone interested in attending meet me at the sculpture infront of the AIC/Communications buildings at 5:00 and we will just assume control of whatever room we choose. The focus here will be to finally complete the paperwork, set up a network so that if we don't get approval we can still get together to shoot or socialize, and just do whatever else comes to mind. If anyone has any questions, just hit me up.

Hi, my friend and I were

Hi, my friend and I were just toying with the idea of a WWU gun club the other day and my girlfriend mentioned that she saw this thread.

I go to school here from out of state so I only have 1 of my guns up here in college with me; its an old Remington 121 Fieldmaster from the 50's (it's p. sweet it's a pump action, tube-fed, .22 LR, quite rare actually- v. fun to shoot). Right now I'm putting some money aside to maybe get something like a 10/22 in the near future. Back home I've got a .308 bolt-action hunting rifle, a .22 bolt-action Mossberg, and an antique 16-gauge pump shotgun from the 30's.

I haven't been to any of the shooting ranges in B'ham, is there a public, free, outdoor range, with no "supervision"/employees somewhere?
At home in Colorado we used to just go out into the desert on public lands (BLM land) and shoot anything we pleased (targets, trash, rabbits, praire dogs, coyotes, etc) and it was generally the normal thing to do around there- but I have a feeling WA gun laws are a little more strict.

Obviously I missed your first meeting but I'd love to sign your club sheet and I bet my buddy would too.

Empty Holster Protest

Hey Everyone,

This week is the "empty holster protest", make sure to participate, and spread awareness that WWU is a victim-rich zone as long as the University denies our right to self-defense.

I just bought myself a new pistol. It's a Ruger Mk. II target with a 10" bull barrel and Bomar sights.

Sorry for the delay

Sorry for the delay everyone, but I've been rather busy as of late. In the time since the signature form was completed, I had been getting Viking 44 ready for the Baja SAE competition that was this weekend (Thursday-Sunday) and taking care of class work as to not fall behind during that absence. Now that the race has been driven, I am once gain able to focus more attention to this endeavor.
