This is my first time taking summer quarter and I was wondering why some of the classes say they go through july 31st and others goes through the end of august?

The classes that go through july are only 4 week courses, the others are 8 weeks....that's the only difference.
Uhhh... Your math's horrible, just fyi...
Western offers two different sessions, 6-week and 9-week. 6-week tends to be 300 / 400 level courses, and 9-week seems to be 100 / 200 level courses, at least that I have noticed. Both of my classes this summer is 300-level so they're just 6 weeks.

Your manners are horrible, just fyi..
Western also offers one week and four week classes.
I think the departments pretty much get to do whatever they want over the summer schedual-wise.
Your spelling is terrible, fyi. *schedule
Also:
Most *real* classes are 6 and 9 weeks.

Haha, thanks. Hate that word so much.
Yeah, intensive one to four credit classes are fake. Wait, what?
I've found duration (4/6/9 week) to be based off subject more than course level. Most (if not all) of the CBE classes are six weeks, some of Chem does a two class eight week (back to back four weeks), think CS is nine.
If you look closely, class length does vary from 1-9 weeks in the summer. Credit hours affect the length considerably so consider that when choosing a summer class, a one week class many meet 8 hours a day for a week and a 9 week meet 3 times a week for an hour. A 4 week class is not more "fake" than a 9 week one, but be wary of shorter length ones as they are likely to be very intensive, a good example are the 300 level organic chemistry classes, 4.5 weeks of full time studying, 10 weeks of info in 4.5 weeks.
