Right now my gpa is exactly 2.00 and i have 99 credits. i need to declare a major soon and i am going for the sociology major which requires a minimum of 2.7 or a soc min gpa of 3.00 which i am nowhere near. i have already done some calculations where if i get a 4.0 in all my classes in fall 09, i would only have a 2.5 overall. I dont know what to do when i apply and i dont get in. so i guess my question is what happens if i dont get in or what can i do to make sure i get in? any help would be great especially those who have been in my situation or is a soc major right now.
Need some advice/help. what to do??

I just graduated as a major in sociology and psychology. The sociology department is, perhaps, one of the most accessible places in the university (I don't necessarily mean getting into the major). That said, take a class with Glenn Tsunokai, Karen Bradley, or Jim Inverarity. Ace those classes, be very integrated in discussion, talk to your professors. If you can show a desire and aptitude that transcends your GPA, you may have a shot at getting in the back door. This is obviously a hypothetical situation, but is most likely to be your best chance to get into the sociology major (outside of a dramatic improvement in your class standing). I know that professors recognize students who do well and sometimes are willing to "go to bat" for them. But, this is no guarantee that you will get into the major. Good luck to you.
Did you try applying at Wcc and transfering credit from there and then come back to WWU with a higher GPS, a great advantage it is cheaper tuition there.
You could declare a general studies major and take courses you need/want to get your GPA up and then apply to the Soc dept once you've raised your GPA, and then you can just switch your major over from the GS to Soc.
You usually don't need to have the GPA overall, but only the most recent courses. If your heart is set on sociology, and you can't get into a major yet, I would work on a minor, get a 3.3 or better the next quarter, and apply then. You can add a note that says your more focused now or explaining life circumstances that lead to your GPA situation. You'd get in for sure. Otherwise, just talk to the professors. Maybe some professors will let you in without declaring the major, and if you ace the classes, they will recommend you.
comm department requirement is an average of 3.0, i have a 2.39... you are not alone, i am worried too

you might be able to declare yourself as a pre-major. for computer science i had too many credits but not the right classes to get into the major so i just went and talked to the counselor and she put me in as a computer science pre-major. really you should just talk to the sociology counselor they should be able to help you out.
