... reasons the e-mail system sucks!

We won't have much time on this guys, I suspect our friends will lock this thread and put some lame ass link up to an FAQ. So here we go. I'll start the first few, you all roll with it from there.

10. Everything seems to be set up right, but all my e-mails from my instructors go directly to my junk box.

9. Microsoft now has all my cutting edge research files on their server!

8. My mom and dad don't know how to use email, they keep picking up the mouse and saying "hello, can you hear me through this thing?"

ha yeah, it kinda pisses me off that people post that link and think it solves all your problems...not all of us are totally computer savvy :)

#7 - it groups all my emails from one person under other random emails from the same person... nothing i love more than searching my entire inbox and outbox for something that is hidden under another message!

Oh, the irony.

4.) It is change, which requires additional learning; despite there being rather complete and easily accessible documentation, it is apparently too much to ask of people to actually think.

Then it's not set up right. Did you check the junk e-mail settings? I'd imagine this would happen if you accidentally added people with e-mail domains ending in @wwu.edu to the blocked senders list. Either way, just add '@wwu.edu' to the safe senders list and you should be OK.

And? Are you seriously worried that MS is going to steal your research paper? Let's not get into tinfoil hat mode here.

???

The reason why that link is posted is because of the fact that everyone isn't tech savvy. And, actually, from my experience, most peoples' problems are solved by the FAQ. Not all, but most.

This is because the inbox is automatically set to sort by conversation. Underneath the searchbox at the top of the page, it will say "Arrange by: Conversation." Click on this and select 'date' and it won't group e-mails that way anymore.

Also, there is a search box at the top of the screen, so I don't see why you would need to manually search your inbox.

I haven't had any problems sending attachments upwards of 10MB in size, so I don't know what your problem is. 2MB was the old file size limit when we were using squirrel mail, so even if we were still using squirrel mail, you still wouldn't be able to send a file that large.

This definitely is covered in the FAQ (http://west.wwu.edu/atus/helpdesk/newemailfaq.shtml). I have helped tons of people who have come into my work do this, and in all cases it took me less than 1 minute to get it all set up for them.

Well, my experience is that people are very aversive when it comes to user interface changes. I'm not exactly sure why, because it usually doesn't take very much time to learn once you read the documentation.

This, despite the fact that students in the Bellingham school district starting at 3rd grade use Outlook for their e-mail. If 3rd graders can figure it out, then I'm sure college students can.

Any attempt to express frustration is met by computer science majors with a callous attitude, and a big bat with a Microsoft logo on it.

(seriously, don't you guys recognize people turning their frustration into something to laugh about?? If you are so dedicated to helping people solve their email issues, why do you couple your assistance with bitter remarks like comparing us to third graders. Don't be such jerks, you are not special because you are happy with the new email. let us have our fun, if we wanted your help we would have asked you for it.)

Objects in mirror are closer than they appear.

Not-technologically-inept /= computer science major.  As I've already covered with Jeff Martin, wherever that thread is, I'm not pro-Microsoft; because I'm against idiots drowning because they're unable to make any attempt to swim, you can't infer that I'm a supporter of what you're against; I'm just against you (you, of course, in the general sense, which I of course only need to clarify since leaving the remote possibility that I would offend you would not be humane).

I've gotten ahead of myself and already covered your second paragraph.
People are frustrated because they're incapable of figuring out their problems and unwilling to put forth the effort to do so, not because the new email system is the spawn of evil Microsoft and designed to confuse all but the most computer savvy.  I think the new email sucks for many reasons, but I sat down and figured out how to install Thunderbird.  Problem solved.

The problem isn't that you're being compared to third graders, the problem is they've bested you.  You're saying that's our fault for pointing it out?  What about information transparency?  Isn't that what you're fighting for?

Callous attitude? Really?

What I was trying to say is that the new e-mail system isn't as incredibly difficult or arcane as some people are letting on, as in the Bellingham school district, elementary schoolers are successfully using an approximation of it. If you have problems, that is one thing. But really... if you would sit down to solve the few problems you are personally having, you are going to find your usability greatly improved. I wasn't trying to be mean.

Also, like the poster above me mentioned, being technically ept has nothing to do with being a computer science major. For example, at the Student Technology Center, we currently have 15 employees. Only 3 of us are computer science majors. Other majors represented at my work are theater, psychology, graphic design, etc. Yet everyone at my work I would consider more than technologically ept because we are all able to adapt to new experiences and solve questions or seek help when we have problems. Also, one of my CS professors last year had problems copying and pasting files. So, knowledge of computer science doesn't necessarily translate over to computer literacy (for the same reason why someone studying astronomy need not necessarily know how to use a telescope).

Also, I'm not pro-Microsoft any more that I'm pro-Google, or pro-Apple, or pro-Campbell's chicken soup. I personally think being "pro" or "anti" anything is just ridiculous in the current technological climate we live in. Microsoft isn't an evil company, and anyone who tries to follow a claim such as this is being intellectually dishonest at best. Your frustration with the new e-mail system is due to not being able to adjust to a different user interface.

By throwing out problems with the new e-mail system without actually trying to find solutions to problems people are having, the whole situation becomes even worse, IMO. Because of this, I actually tried to show solutions to the solvable problems that people are having instead of basically trying to show them as insolvable, which is also intellectually dishonest. I don't personally see how a list of complaints is fun, no matter what the topic is. A list of complaints with solutions, however, is different.

If you don't personally approve of my input into your thread, then you might not want to not make it on a public forum where all members of the university community are free to participate.

If anyone has any problems with the new e-mail system, I would be more than happy to help him or her. But throwing out comments like "it sucks" and not offering up any help for it is what I have a problem with.

it sucks.

sorry that is a problem for you.

forwarding it is a problem. linking it to gmail is a problem. getting stuff in my junk box is a problem (and I did exactly what you suggested and it still goes there).

Did I say anything about ATUS? Go flame someone else's thread. Let us bitch about this, because frankly I never touched the old system except once to forward it and there was never a hiccup. Now, I have the hiccups. This thread was supposed to be a fun way for some of us to get our frustrations off of our chest, and you have both insulted us by insinuating that we are inept, unable to cope with change, and subpar to a third grader. To me this is a clear violation of the guidelines, and yet because you didn't throw the word fuck or SURPRISE around, no one cares. Well I care. Your attitude, towards what probably would have made a couple of us laugh about something that is irritating is really pathetic and egotistical. Again, if we wanted your help we would have asked for it. We don't, we just want to laugh and commiserate about this. The thread did not start with "help me with my email, or I need a solution". So, why don't you start a thread where people can go to get help, oh wait there is one... that's right this is "top ten reasons the e-mail sucks" so if you have something to contribute to our humorous endeavor great, otherwise why are you here?

You are confusing your problems with problems with the system.

Unsurprisingly, you don't know what flaming is.  Chris provided logical responses to previous posts.  He's not flaming (ironically, you actually are).  But that's for another day.

Stuff for you to reread:

I don't know about you, but this is still a humorous endeavor to me; I'm having a blast!

Boo fucking hoo.  Can't handle a flame?  Don't get on the internet.

Anyways, one thing that pisses me off the e-mail system is I can't figure out how to delete more than one e-mail at a time.

What's really funny is I find the Outlook Light version on my iPhone is easier to use in that regard than this version we use.

However I give Outlook props cause I like being able to view the contents of my folders AND open e-mails all on the same screen.

#2) Now you have people on the WWU forum all thinking they're David Letterman.

on a serious note, i also use hotmail as my *primary* email, and it honestly is kind of a pain in the ass to juggle both MS based email accounts, because the purpose of auto-login is defied if i have to keep logging out to access my other account.

#0 reason the new email sucks

Whereas the old email retrieves your email in 0.45 sec and never seizes up, the new one takes 15 sec to load each page and hangs your browser approximately 100% of the time.

(Yes, even IE8)
