What week is the 50th anniversary celebration?

Some important things you should include in this time capsule:

1. A copy of the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, and the Constitution.
2. A copy of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
3. A bag of weed, a pack of cigarettes, one bottle of tequila, a semi-automatic rifle and a note asking future people to guess which is illegal.

The 50th Anniversary celebration will begin Saturday Oct 31 with a Halloween dance and haunted house and end Nov. 7th. During the entire week there will be multiple events and special celebrations to celebrate the VU's birthday. The week of Nov 1-7th will be a dedicated to "Decade Week", which will celebrate each decade with themed decor, promotions, and prizes. Make sure to visit the VU website and become a fan of the VU on facebook in order to get inside info about prizes, giveaways, and more free stuff! There is much to come!

Thank you guys for the CREATIVE time capsule ideas! They were very entertaining. I would love more feedback on this topic. Try to think of ideas that might define our generation for future students. PLEASE ADD YOUR OPPINIONS!!!!

as the students lifeblood, a bag of coffee should be thrown into the capsule. Maybe we could all vote on a delicious local brand? Or have a taste contest.

Great idea about the coffee! Does anyone else have feedback on this topic?We really want this to be student created!

Maybe ask if Coffee Lady, Tully's, and Wood's would like to participate in something? Or donate to the capsule? For them it would be good PR I dont see why they wouldn't at least like to participate in a taste contest or something.

 I don't know how big the time capsule is but I think it would be cool if we gave everyone at western the opportunity to write a letter. They could put anything in the letter, their view of western, what their life is like now, poem, picture, ANYTHING. I think if you really want students on board the students and faculty should be the ones making the time capsule, because we are what makes the school. We definitely need some photos of all the sculptures, buildings, and maybe even people. Maybe have KUGS put together a mix cd that plays music and some interviews or something.By the way..has anyone seen "knowing"?....

I love the mix cd idea!!! It would be great to have pictures of current students so future Vikings can look back on our choice of clothing. What do you guys think of a "fashion contest" to nominate students who have the best style to be featured in the time capsule? We could represent a diverse group of fashion choices, since our generation is not defined by one style.

The time capsule will be created by students and staff because that's exactly who is supposed to be represented by the time capsule.

Well Pete, I'll see what I can do about placing you in the time capsule. It would be quite an adventure! Although you would be stuck behind a brick wall for 50 years....

 I just watched "Knowing" yesterday, how ironic! :) 
I love the idea of doing a time capsule, but it's a bit creepy after watching that movie...

I think a fashion contest sounds great, and I also like the idea of including letters from Western students. I don't know how much room there is in the capsule, but there should definitely be a way for the average student to make a contribution.

as long as I get reimbursed for the cost of its replacement. I have other arms to provide too, but the same rule will apply.

EDIT: As of September 2nd, 2009, I can no longer offer my arms to this cause, as they have been removed from my possession and are now with the Oak Harbor Police Department due to a big mess of a situation that has me facing 2 counts of violating RCW 9.41.240 although I believe the charges should be dropped as I was en route from my place of abode to a piece of real property under my control.

We should put in an ID card. its something we have to use every day. and its uninque to western and the 2009-2010 class

As a Time Capsule should encompass the paradigm of the times, we should include:

A picture of Barack Obama

Obama's proposed health care bill

A picture of Michael Jackson and a eulogy(may the King of Pop rest in peace)

A picture of Chris Brown and Rhianna with a black eye

A DVD of X-Men Origins:Wolverine

A Coldplay CD

A laptop, that when turned on, is programed to open up Facebook and Twitter.

Could we take pictures of what the campus looked like? Students at work or play?

Some examples:

1.The Rec Center

2. The AW building

3. One of the cafes/dining halls

4. Dorms

5. Just student life in general. Pictures of Vendor's Row, students relaxing by the fountain or studying on a lawn, playing frisbee by the Comm building.

Wow! Thanks for all the suggestions guys. There will also be a suggestion box located in the VU 6th floor lobby from Oct 26-Nov 7th so that you guys can keep generating ideas. Please feel free to make ANY suggestions, even if they seem ridiculous. This is a representation of US as students so it will be created by US! Keep the ideas flowing!

We should put a picture of this man, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIvNopv9Pa8 in there.  While not being a staple of our generation, he was probably the greatest human being to ever live.  He died last month.

I do not support the Michael Jackson tribute/euology, mostly because I find it incredibly odd that everyone hated him as a child molester up until the day of his death, but now everyone loves him.  But I probably don't hold the popular opinion on that so whatever!

When is the capsule going to be sealed and hidden?

You should just put an i-pod in there. It seems like everybody has one! You could include songs, student interviews, pictures, etc. on it. It would probably still work in 50 years, right?

As for picture ideas: typical dining hall meal, a couple dorm rooms, downtown bellingham, underground coffeehouse event or some campus event.

Also, you should print this forum topic and include it in the capsule so the students can see what kind of things we suggested compared to what is actually in the capsule.

The time capsule will be sealed and placed in the exterior brick wall of the Viking Union some time early spring quarter 2010. 

We are hoping to get as many student suggestions as possible to make sure that this piece is truly representative of the current student population. All of the ideas generated so far have been wonderful. Please continue to add your opinion!
