I am graduating this quarter with a degree in economics, and of course I am biased but the department is incredible. My favorite professor has been by far Dr. Krieg, some don't like him because he can be a bit abrasive at times but he is a skilled teacher and can explain material very well (he is quite friendly if you put the effort in and go talk to him in his office). If you ask a question in class he answers it and then every time asks "Did I answer your question?" and if you say no he starts over and uses an entirely different example to help you understand. That may seem basic, but a lot of professors do not respond that well to student questions. Dr. Durham is also an incredible teacher, her classes are *very* difficult and she may seem cold but is very intelligent and explains the material well and you learn a ton from any class you take from her. I also enjoyed Dr. Hodges and Dr. Sula. Overall, I have been very impressed by the faculty and staff. Teresa is the department secretary and she empathizes with the paper work run around that students have to go through and does everything in her power to help. She actually has expressed her disappointment in offices like the registrars and how difficult they make it for students and goes completely out of her way to lend a helping hand.
So that was my rave about the department, I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.

I totally agree. I'm not in the econ department, but from what I've seen, the econ departnment has the best overall faculty.
I've taken quite a few econ classes at Western (like 8 or 10 - IB w/ econ minor) and I have yet to find a teacher that I haven't really liked. Every prof I have had for econ has been one of my most liked instructors of all time - including the buddy teachers you have in high school. They all seem to really care that you understand and enjoy what you're learning about. It makes me want to double major w/ econ just so that I can take more econ classes.
A quick note:
I hope Antholt is still instructing; he comes off a little gruff at first and sometimes irritates some people until they get to know him, but he's an awesome prof and a great guy that seems to take the most human approach to econ. It would benefit you to get to know him early in the quarter - not so he favors you, but just so that you can understand him better. It made a huge difference.
Fuck Yeah Econ profs.

If you doing straight econ it's not that hard. You're only looking at about 60 credits for the major out of your whole 180 to graduate. Classes are all about how much time you want to put into them especially upper level. All the teachers are pretty good as long as you have a passion for economics and are self-motivated.
