Hello,
I am a comm premajor and I was wondering how difficult it is to get into the program here at western? I am not sure when I plan to apply to be a major but I am working on my prerequisities right now but I am still a little nervous because of the average gpa is suppostly 3.1 and I am still a long way from there. If anyone who has gotten into the major who has had the same type of situation I would appreciate any advice. Thanks

Hey there! I am currently a Comm major, and while I have had a pretty solid GPA, so I havent quite been in your situation, i think I still have some pretty good advice. If youre GPA isnt up to par, you NEED to make sure everything else is PERFECT. Amazing letters of recommendation. Flawless resume. And a beautifully written letter of intent. You can even express in your letter of intent that while your GPA isnt very good right now, you are working hard to change that. (if you have a good GPA in comm classes, you can say that while you other grades are stellar, you excel in communication studies). It also looks really good to be involved in the department. Joining comm club is super easy, and you meet other people who are also comm majors, or wanting to be comm majors that REALLY help you out. Its not the MOST amazingly fun club ever, but it looks great on the resume, and you meet cool people who you can network with. OR you could be an IA (instructors assistant) through the comm 101 program. This also looks good, and you can get class credits. (you can also get class credits by being an officer in comm club). The more involved with the department you get, the better. Make SURE that you have everything you need for the portfolio and take it to a peer adviser multiple times to double check. There are a lot of things required, and they are always adding stuff, and the peer advisers or Ann Reynolds will know. Feel free to email me if you want to know anything else, or I'd be more than happy to meet you on campus and show you my portfolio if you would like an example. My email is scotts25@cc.wwu.edu.
