I'm looking for information on Mt. Baker backcountry skiing (for the winter). Is it permitted to ski anywhere other than the designated ski runs? If so, where is it permitted to ski? Is there any more information you can provide me with, or any resources you can point me to for more information? Thank you.

baker has a very extensive back country....one of the best in the region. however to access these areas you are required to have a transeiver, shovel and probe. some areas are more dangerous than others but at baker, i would really recomend having these.
as far as where to find terrain, it's kind of surrounding the ski area. some of the best, and most dangerous runs, are to the left of chair 8 called "the arm" which is all visible on a clear day from the chair. but in general, just ask a baker local to point you in the direction of good bc; there are countless places to go. just be careful and always go with experienced skiers who have done it before. There are also many hidden places that are in bounds that can be just as rewarding if you know where to go.
and also, baker offers avalanche courses at the beginning of the season that cost a bit of money, but are a good investment if you plan to spend a good amount of time back there.
