Hey Everybody-

I'm a reporter for The Western Front, and I'm working on a story about places to shop in Bellingham that are green (because they sell second-hand stuff) and that benefit good causes. I'm including Value Village, The Re-Store and Buffalo Exchange in my story.

I would really love some student perspectives on the perks of shopping at these places, so if you have an opinion, I wanna hear it!

Either reply to this or send me a message with your answers. If you want your responses to be considered for the paper I'll need your first and last name, phone number and class standing.

Thanks!
-Shea

.

I think it should be mandatory that all Western Front writers have to tag the beginning of their topic titles with [WF] so the misleading topic titles stop.  I came in here expecting tips on cheap stuff...

Plato's Closet is a great

Plato's Closet is a great place for second-hand clothes. You can sell your old clothing there, too, for a little extra cash.

recycling/repurposing items!

Shea-
I wanted to respond to this because I think that most everything: household furnishings, appliances, clothing, cars, bikes...you know all can be reused. Back, in the day when I first became a student here at WWU, I have to admit I was caught up in having nice things and new things...but after a few thousand dollars in credit card debt, and realizing that none of the clothing or items that I bought fit me, or they are lost, they're stained, or completely out of style, all of the debt was for what-nothing now! So after, having twins 15 months ago and realizing how much they have grown and quickly go through so many things-I now view especially clothing as a disposable commodity! I have saved so much money either passing along clothing back and forth for my kids to other moms. I have saved so much money buying my own clothing at the amazing consignment shops here in town such as: The Clothing Rack, Buffalo Exchange, Value Village, The Goodwill, PassionFly, and also craigslist! There are also many consignment shops for kids too-I really do think that one can find really nice things consigning-these shops all have standards, and they only except things that aren't stained, or ripped, and are in excellent used condition. Also, with children, sometimes people get things that the kids never even wear, so most of the time items are brand-new with tags! I'm such an advocate of consigning because you can always incorporate something new into your wardrobe and sell or trade the stuff that just doesn't ring your bells anymore-As far as household goods, I've furnished my apartment on pretty much all used furniture-whether it's friends old couches or tv-stands, or dressers, whatever-you can always find furniture in good condition. I suggest craigslist or the REStore or the Goodwill-during this time I've found that people just want to sell things for a little bit of money, because they just need the money. So, I've found some amazing deals! example, a new in good condition oak table for my dining room in really good condition for el cheapo-just because a couple were trying to sell their condo here in town and all it's furnishings. Craigslist is super easy to navigate and most often people are really friendly, plus it's completely free. Ebay, you have to pay listing fees shipping fees-some would say that it's a little bit of a hassle, so I suggest craigslist-in your local area for household items. You know too, as far as transportation, I just purchased a new subaru well new to me, in excellent used condition-used cars are great-bikes: check out the HUB downtown off the Boulevard Park Trail-you can look through mounds of bike parts and they can custom fit you a bike for way cheap! So, I'll step down from the soap box here and leave it at recycling pretty much everything can be done-if not try to repurpose things-be creative, and have fun with it!

So this isn't necessarily

So this isn't necessarily second hand, but there's a furniture place off of the Guide called Save On Furniture, behind the gas station and mattress store. They take furniture that was damaged (normally from department stores like JCPenney) that they are unwilling to sell to customers. They then fix it up and charge a way cheaper price. I work on a floor of office suites, one is an office for a furniture company, and they receive returned furniture there. They don't care that they're throwing away perfecty good furniture because it's cheaper to throw it away than have it shipped back to their actual warehouse in Canada. The furniture at Save on Furniture is really nice and usually costs at least half of what it would originally sell for, and they have a mix of everything: beds, couches, wardrobes, small kitchen appliances, dishes, a popcorn maker, and even some clothes sometimes (like I said, JCPenny, who has a bit of everything). I think they're open Thurs-Sun.
