Does it still take a team of people to decide what to do to marked messages?

+1 to this question. It has become very apparent that moderating here is drastically different than anywhere else. I feel that more information on moderator operational procedure needs to be disclosed in order for people (interested in becoming moderators) to actually make an informed decision.
Good questions!
We will have two supermoderators this year. Jamin and Jon Bash. They take a more administrative role in that they will help select moderators, will work with / mentor other moderators, respond to flags on the system, and will serve on the advisory board for Viking Village.
A moderator's term can last as long as the moderator wishes and remains associated with Western, as long as they remain active and doing a good job.
What qualifies someone to be a moderator -- I would say an active interest in Viking Village and a good track record of positive and appropriate participation on the forum would be the key things. For new people who may not have a track record, we might look at participation on other forums, experience as a moderator on other forums, an understanding of civil dialogue through coursework or other examples that someone could provide. I would leave this open to those interested to include any information that would help us evaluate your ability to do the following:
- participate as an active member of the community
- Help keep things on track: answer questions when possible, forward them to appropriate people if they aren't being answered on the forum, defuse an explosive conversation that's going the wrong way
- When necessary, edit inappropriate content, lock threads and recognize trolls. Hopefully, if enough moderators are doing the things in the first two bullets, this third bullet will be a small part of the work.
Moderators will be selected by myself (Andy Peterson), Jeff Purdue, Jamin, and Jon Bash. We'll work as a team with the moderators, and we may bring issues to the Advisory Board if we need further support on particular issues.
If you'd like to nominate moderators, that would be great! I'd suggest that you get the person's buy - in first, but certainly a recommendation from other participants would be a factor that we'd consider in selecting a moderator.
I hope that answers your questions !

No. Moderators are empowered to do what needs to be done.
I would liek to be a moderator if there are still open spots to do so. please let me know.
thank you
Scottz and anyone else still interested -- We are still looking for new moderators. If you could send me a private message and tell me why you think you'd make a good moderator, that would be great! Share any experience or qualities you have that you think would make you a good moderator. Thanks!

What's the difference between a 'moderator' and a 'super moderator'?
How long is a moderator's term?
What qualifies someone to be a moderator, and what would be grounds for denying someone the title?
Who picks from the pool of people who would like to be moderators? What do they base their decision on?
Can we nominate moderators?
What are moderators capable of? Who do they answer to?
tks.
