I'm new to Western, and I was wondering if there's anyone out there who's into steampunk. I'm trying to find new people to hang out with, and I'm an aspiring steampunk myself.
Any steamy friends?

I like steampunk, but I'm just getting into it.
If by steampunk you mean retrofuturistic fiction and art involving age-of-steam-ish technology, culture, sensibility and aesthetics juxtaposed in an obviously (post)modern chronological setting, then hell yeah. Steampunk is quite... awesome.
Here's something you've never seen before: a 13-minute Chinese short that has heavy steampunk overtones. No dialog, you'll understand what's going on. Quite sublime.
Oh, awesome, it's good to hear there are some people out there who know what I'm on about. I'm wondering, is there anything for a steampunk to do here on campus? Any steampunk groups, or anything like that?
I'm also headed to seattle for steamcon next month, anyone else going?

There does not seem to be a group, but you can easily start one. As for activities, idunno, watch Castle in the Sky?
Steamcon looks like fun, I'd go if I had some sort of transportation...
Hey,
Steampunk is quite awesome, but I need more exposure to it.
I work at Value Village, a thrift store up by the mall, and as we get closer to Halloween we're having a bunch of themed costume days. There is a steampunk day coming up, I'll try to figure out when it is and get back to you.

Oh, gosh, that would be REALLY awesome. Super spectacular, actually. Thank you so much!
Ha, I just watched Castle in the Sky a few weeks ago. It's all on Veoh for anyones that's interested...
Steampunk's always been a fun subject for me in art. It's hard to just create one vehicle or character without surrounding it in a whole steampunk universe.
Not QUITE steampunk, but an admirable halloween costume duo that might inspire some ideas :http://www.flickr.com/photos/nathan_awesome/1814409066/

WANT!
This thread is really making me want to play that game. The movie "9" is another good example of steampunk, or rather "stitchpunk". I'm not really into steampunk but it looks very cool from what I've seen on the interwebs.
9 is a great example of the steampunk aesthetic, but it only scratches the surface of the ideals that steampunk as a culture revolves around.
If anyone is interested, another Western student wrote a paper on steampunk, particularly as a fashion movement. It's a good read if you're into such things. http://yokopyro.deviantart.com/art/Origins-of-Steampunk-121385398
The more I hear back from people and see how many views this thread is getting, I'm thinking of trying to get together some kind of steampunk group. I don't really know what the group would actively do yet, but is there anyone out there who would want to join me in something like this?
The Bellingham Roller Betties have a steampunk themed team, the Cog Blockers. Check out their website at www.bellinghamrollerbetties.com The bouts are always fun and both the Cogs and some fans dress up for it. Tryouts for the next year are going on right now, if anyone is interested.
Theres always RPG's (pen and paper like d&d) a good list http://www.steampunk.republika.pl/link03pl.html#Rpg , I have heard good things about unhallowed metropolis a zombie/steampunk world. Also directly under that is board and card games...
My roomate and I are headed to Steamcon as well. And yes, you definietly have to tell us when Steampunk Value Village day is!!!!
Ever since your first post I've been looking into steampunk on the internet and am really interested. If you get a group going and are willing to tolerate newbies I'd love to learn more.
I LOVE steampunk,
Ive built my own steampunk projects (I'm currently working on a keyboard of my own!)
I would love to talk with someone else who is into steampunk as well.
The only other people i've had the chance to chat with were at Maker Fare, and they were pretty busy running their booths (Jake VonSlat and Datamancer)
I also like steampunk literature and film
HINT, check out The adventures of Jasper Morellow
its prety much the most steampunk thing ive seeen!

I hope to be able to chat more with some other punkers!

EDIT: I would LOVE to start some sort of steampunk club or some such. Ashley, Shoot me an email and we can talk about it. pitzf@students.wwu.edu
I would totally love to join a steampunk club if one was started. I was introduced to steampunk this summer when a friend had me listen to Abney Park. I was also totally thinking about trying to go to Steam Con because Abney Park was going to be performing there.
I am also going to SteamCon! I would love to get some kind of group going.
I wasn't planning to go to steamcon, but if I could find a group of people to go with it would be realy fun.

I want to go to steamcon!!!
Could we carpool to steam con please? I reeeeaaallly need a ride to seattle. I can give you 3 bucks and you can dump me off on the side of the road in north Seattle....seriously...I NEED A RIDE.
I'm realy getting serious about the idea of starting a club of some sort. I hope to be able to talk with any perspective people to get an idea about what activities etc. could happen. I also want to get an idea about what area of steampunk people are into (I for instance have special place in my heart for the actual making of steampunk gadgets. As opposed to writing, costume, and music) I would like to run a quick meet and great at 6:15 on Monday by the fountin in red square. Other times work for me to, but I figured that other people are more likely to be free a little after dinner time. If you have another time that works better for you let me know. I hope to see all of you there.
Forrest
P.S. Please let me know if that time works for you so I can get a handle on how many people will be there.
There are other Miyazaki movies that I would consider steampunk (to some degree). You should all see them anyway. They are Howell's Moving Castle (based on the book by Diana Wynne Jones) and Nausica.
ALSO there is a 4-book series by Philip Reeve: Mortal Engines, Predator's Gold, Infernal Devices, and A Darkling Plain. READ THEM STEAM PUNKERS.
Also, there is a book by Tim Powers called On Stranger Tides that appeared at steamcon, and the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is gonna be based on it (hopefully to a higher degree than just borrowing the title, but it's Disney, so we will see.)
GO FORTH.
I'd love to meet other aspiring steampunkers. I got attached to the steampunk scene through music, but I love all the gagets and the costumes. I think it would be awesome to make steampunk gagents but do not know how to do so, maybe you could show me how Forrest.
Erica
This is really exciting! I just discovered this discussion and it is awesome to see so many people interested in Steampunk! I would love to meet more people who are into it as I am just discovering the whole genre myself. If people still plan to have a casual meet at Red Square Fountain I will definitely go!
Great, I'll be there 6:15
I'm wearing a t-shirt with a red star on it, so I should be not too hard to spot.
look forward to meeting everyone later today
I just found this thread, only to discover that the meetup time had already come and gone by about 30 minutes.
Anyway, I really want to go to Steamcon this year, and have access to a van if people want to talk carpool. Anyway, if you all decide to meet again or form an unofficial club, I am so there! I love steampunk comics and movies, and have always been fascinated by the DIY-crafting aspect of the subculture, which is similar in many ways to cosplay culture.
Also, I really want to make a necklace out of watch parts!
Labors of love like this case mod are also rather amazing to my less-than-savvy self:

farrela2, I'm so sorry we missed you. Nothing huge went down, we just got to know eachother a bit. Were going to continue to use this thred as a chatting place, so dont forget to check back. We'll chat about another meet up soon.
-Forrest
My friend and I are making steampunk goggles for Halloween! Woot!
I too missed out on the steam punkiness of the red square meet up. But I’m glad that it looks like it will continue. And all of Miyazaki’s movies are amazing. If anyone’s into steam punk jewelry and such http://sadwonderland.deviantart.com/ is by far the best. Her necklaces are stunning. She is amazing. Nuf said.
I would like to take the next step in the process and meet to go over the minimal paperwork, and talk about any expectations that people would have of a club. I thought that I would get a quick count of people that would be up for putting pen to paper and getting something started. I was thinking about a Friday meeting, but I wanted to judge the entusiasm. Again, if Friday does not work for you, let me know, and we can push the date.
Thanks-
Forrest

New steampunky book looks rather interesting. It's light reading, but it's the theme that counts eh?
Also, pretty pictures. O_o

Hey I am interested in joining some kind of Steampunk club, but I also missed out on the meet up. Should I just keep checking this thread for updates?
Seaweed, definentaly keep checking in here. As I posted above, I'm looking to make the next step on friday if enough people are interested. Im not sure if it will happen, but I'm going to send some pm's to get people alerted. We only need 5 people to get it started. I'm not sure what time tomorrow it would happen, do you have a preference? I was thinking after the dinner hour again, but if anyone has an issue with that, it can be changed.
Thanks, and look forward to meeting you,
Forrest
Unfortunately I am not going to be around on Friday but I would still love to join in whenever I can!
I didn't get a big response about the meetup (I waited a little long to ask). I'm going to postpone the meeting untill next thursday. I hope that will work for everyone.
Thanks Again,
Forrest
Also, DONT FORGET: let me know when your free so we can find a time that will work for everyone.
Any day next week after 4:00 or 4:30 I am free for another meetup!
Did anyone make it to Steamcon? I was unable to attend but would love to hear about peoples' experiences at it.
