Your console is probably still covered by Microsoft, and even if it isn't, good luck trying to send it in once the warranty is voided by trying to repair it yourself.

hey giddyup, I'm sure that

hey giddyup,

I'm sure that you probably already knew this, but Microsoft has extended their warranty to cover all red ring repairs regardless of how old your 360 is.  I bought mine in 2006 and just this summer got the red rings.  i sent it in to microsoft, got it back repaired about 10 days later and with a free month of live.  it costs like 10 dollars to send it (shipping) but that's much cheaper than just about any of the do it yourself kits that you can buy online or what people charge to do it for you. plus, it is true that as soon as you open up the box to try and repair it yourself the warranty is voided.  if i could convince you to just send it in i think you'll have a much more pleasant experience

They only extended the warranty to cover 3 years, and only for the RRoD, so his console could be out of warranty.

But still if you call and yell and complain enough how it's their product and it broke and ask to talk to the supervisors of the 1-800-myxbox people, they will usually take your xbox and fix it to avoid conflict.

I didn't realize there was a 3 year warranty, mine should have been out of warranty then but they still took it.  maybe you can kind of worm your way into the system.

LOL!  Ok, props to the moderators, that is by far the greatest job of fixing an offensive statement I have ever seen :)

When will people ever learn

When will people ever learn to ditch the faulty, defective Xbox 360 and go for the superior, reliable console in the PS3? It will save you a lot of money too, in the long run.

WTF

Okay. Clearly giddyup's comment was not acceptable in this forum. Equally unacceptable, however, is changing his comment to something that he did not say.

If you're having trouble seeing why this is a problem, let me explain. The moderators could just have easily changed his comment to say something incriminating.

The appropriate response is to punish the user, lock the thread, remove the thread, or any other option that doesn't include completely altering another person's statement.

Also, the "Department of Harmonization" and "Department of Sanitization" is slightly reminiscent of 1984. Just sayin'.

I agree I don't like the fact that the moderators can change what someone has said.  On other forums the mods will just delete the post outright, which I think is more acceptable.

It doesn't make much sense for a mod to edit someone's post anyways, cause the original poster can just edit it back.

Stay on topic. Don't try to bring an irrelevant argument to this topic.  The original poster asked about how to fix their 360 not what you think of the PS3.

I'd definitely see if Microsoft will cover it first.  If they won't take care of it, someone around here should pop up and offer pretty quick.  It's normally not a difficult fix.

Unless something has changed, RRoD is covered because of the class action brought on by it.

(Continuing the) off-topic: when moderating, transparency should always be the number one priority.  Based on how moderation has been historically executed, it is clearly not as making sure everyone's feelings has been almost explicitly stated as the more important goal.  At the very least, whoever outright edits a post should note that they did so/identify themselves (Department of Harmonization lol).

mods did the right thing

the guys comment was racist, and rather than ban him they probably sent him a message telling him to cut it out.

Topic, topic, topic.

I'm astounded at how fast threads fail around here.

To summarize:

1. RRoD is covered by warranty, and even if it weren't, you can harass Microsoft into fixing it for you.

2. If you open it up, it's considered a mod, and the warranty is voided.

3. Take the PS3 discussion to a PS3 thread.

4. Take the "I'm gonna complain about how 1984 the mods are" to another, more appropriate thread, or stop posting if you don't like mods chaing a racist comment into a sarcastic one.

I don't see how admitting to a very serious crime makes your point at all. In fact, I think that you put no effort into it at all.

I think that editting posts with new content is not a great way to moderate. I would have been fine with a standard

The mod edit replaced the word "jew."  Of course, in this context, there is nothing offensive about it, making it ineligible for (justifiable) moderation.

Fact: moderator censorship/content is a great idea (let's not try to get hung up on semantics like Cole_Edwards saying "you people").
