Starting up a metal fun club!

I am a big fan of metal and rock in general, from  The Rolling Stones and The Police all the way to The Black Daliah Murder and Mastadon. Most of the people that I have met here really don't listen to anything near the extremes of death metal and I'm the odd one out listening to Killswitch Engage while everyone else is bumping rap. It would be cool to get to know some other people that are into the music that I am into and maybe go see some shows. I just got back from a Dethklok and Mastsdon concert a few weeks ago and it blew my mind. Anyways, if your interested, search for the WWU metal coalition on facbook (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/group.php?gid=153731714695&re...), or just drop me an email. I'm Andy btw.

I'm not too much of a metalhead, and I don't really have time for anymore clubs (there are numerous that I wish I could participate in : / ), but I do love me some metal on occassion and I wish you luck in your endeavors. Also, I really wish I could have gone to that Mastodon/Dethklok concert. Mastodon is definitely my favorite metal band. Also into Opeth, Isis, Akimbo, Rhapsody (of Fire), and various others.

Don't know much about music, but like metal. a LOT.

Hey!

I have also noticed that many people here don't go for the whole metal deal--I am not extremely well versed in music/ bands, probably owing to the fact that I dont havve any kind of mp3 player. I would love to listen to some more metal and expand my familiarity a bit. I am familiar with and really enjoy  a few of the bands you mentioned ( Killswitch engage and Detklok and now Mastodon).

Thanks for the link!

Any and all ROCK!!!

I often feel like the odd man out because everyone around me is listening to rap while I'm rocking out with anything from classic rock to heavy metal. I like just about any kind of rock that flows. I'm really into Black Tide right now, I think they could be the next big thing. I also think Steel Panther is a band on the rise but there is nothing as good as the classics. I'm talking about Metallica, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, AC/DC, and of course Sabbath! Oh yeah, can't forget about Thin Lizzy and some Jimi.

Suicide Silence,

Suicide Silence, Whitechapel, Emmure, etc. are everything that is wrong with metal these days.  Oh, and Bring Me The Horizon especially.

And Converge is by far the best band on the Mastodon/Dethklok tour.  High On Fire is rad as well.  Mastodon stopped being good two albums ago.  As far as bands that I'm into currently, I've been listening to a lot of Wolves In The Throne Room, Nile, Trap Them, Skeletonwitch and Boris.

Did you see Suicide Silence at The Viaduct with BYD? I was at that show. So good!

I knew someone was going to say that, haha. I guess "deathcore" isn't exactly metal, but it's not bad! Well, BMTH is kinda. And Emmure, yeah, not good.

Daaaang. I'm going to have to disagree with you twice on this list. I hate Bring Me the Horizon, and I love Mastodon's last two albums (have yet to get their older stuff; I can never find it in record stores, and only looking there prevents me from binging online).

Also, to everyone, look up "boat rudder strange mountain" on YouTube if you haven't yet. :D Or "I am here to ride bike." There's a couple of stupid/homophobic points in the video, but for the most part it's quiiite hilarious.

Oh, and I think deathcore and mathcore are closer to really awful "hardcore" than "metal." But that's all just semantics. "Hardcore" bands do tend to be more boy-band-ish and vomit-inducing, though.

Dude all about melodic death.

Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom, Hypocrisy, Amon Amarth, (old) In Flames, At the Gates and Dark Tranquillity!! And the symphonic bands are nice to-- Dimmu Borgir, Nightwish, Epica, Abigail Williams, Ceremonial Castings etc. You should check these guys out. I dunno about  AW, & CC though cause you'll have to have a taste for black metal.

I don't think I'm a metalhead, but I do like to listen to good metal! As long as its not excessive nonmelodic growling or screaming, and the riffs beneath are catchy, I'm for it! I'm more into the older stuff though, but I try to listen every now and then to newer stuff. Not sure if they're new, but Municipal Waste is great! I dig a few Mastadon stuff too

I can listen to good death metal forever mostly because the vocals kind of turn into just another sound and to me it's almost like an instrumental. Yeah I'm not such a big fan of metalcore that much with the emotional breakdowns mid song which totally ruin it for me,  killswitch doesn't seem whiney but I can't listen to them for long; I'm much more into brutal stuff like pantera.

Dude I love like all of those bands. It's nice to take a break from listening to Cannibul Corpse and relax to some Finish/Swedish Viking genius. For the longest time I use to listen to Runes To My Memory to go to sleep. The farthest that I go into black metal is probably Behemoth if that even counts.

I saw behemoth and got their autographs. It was the first time I had ever seen them and I kind of thought it was a joke because they took it so seriously. Also, at least 2 of the band members are huge jerks when I met them. I guess they must have a power trip or something.

Sadly, Dethklok was the only good part of the most recent concert. It's fairly amusing that a band satirizing metal has the highest metal albums on the charts though I guess that's what happens when you're as good as Brandon Smalls.

Umm, I said BMTH is the epitimy of everything that is terrible in current metal.  I don't know how you interpretted it to mean I like them, haha.  The last two Mastodon records both lean heavily towards the prog-metal side of the spectrum, and they do so in a really generic and boring way.  But I can see why someone would like them I guess, I'm just not too big on prog.

And you obviously don't know a thing about hardcore.

D'oh. My bad, yeah, I didn't read that very carefully. >_<

But anyways, I do know something about some of the bands that label themselves as "hardcore," and boy are they awful. But maybe I'm just missing out on the "real" and "good" stuff.

Metal is awesome

I love metal and really know what you mean when you say everyone is bumping rap and stuff... lol. i definitely get some crap for listening to metal but i do it anyways. Avenged Sevenfold is great, killswitch engage and bullet for my valentine too. The really hardcore stuff is awesome as well though like Children of bodem, Lamb of God, Cradle of filth. Anything in the realm of rock works ha ha.

more brutal like pantera?

are you kidding? haha pantera is one of the shitties bands ever. thats a paradoxical statement. Dethklok sucks too. its not even a real band. i agree its just a joke idk why people like it. idk i get into metal with good music. i follow the talent. so Between the buried and me and BORN OF OSIRIS and other stuff like that is just incomprehensible to me how talented it is. listen to Abstract Art by born of osiris and tell me of one person that could cover that song. i finally got it down on guitar after a year of practice. then finding any drummer who is good enough, impossible.

A lot of bands toss around that label even when it has nothing to do with their sound.  What are some bands you are thinking of?

If you want to try getting into hardcore, I'd suggest these bands: Converge, American Nightmare/Give Up The Ghost, Bane, Blacklisted, Killing The Dream, Champion, Comeback Kid, Have Heart, Trial.

Technicality does not equal quality.  That's why so much of the music coming out of the tech-death genre is redundant and generic.  Born of Osiris is a prime example.  Hell, they aren't even close to being the most technical.  BTBAM on the other hand are fantastic, but they aren't tech-death.

And that drummer is far from the best.  Yeah, he's good, but his drumming is pretty standard for the genre.

I dont know about anyone else

I dont know about anyone else but I CANT stand singling in metal. It completely kills the raw energy of the sound IMO. Lamb of God was what brought me into the metal scene and I still listen to them pretty often.  Ive recently started listening to more death metal bands such as amon amarth and nile.

and Born of Osiris? serious? there is no flow to that band, just a buch of all stars doing solos. If your going to be bashing on legit bands you could at least bring up someone else better than that who has some depth.

That statement is true in some cases, where bands try to force the melodic singing into the music.  Case in point: Cryptopsy's latest album.  But really it depends on the genre, and even sometimes a specific band.  Bands like Neurosis, Between The Buried and Me,  and Converge all incorporate singing into their music in various ways, and it works for those bands.  But when shitty metalcore bands like As I Lay Dying and All That Remains use melodic singing, it fails miserably.

are you kidding? just because you can't even begin to understand the arrangements and complexities of their time signatures doesn't make them bad lol. IN MY OPINION, you've greatly missed the whole concept of that particular band. but again thats just my opinion.

Imitation Pantera band is imitating. How did it take you a whole year to learn this on guitar? Drums don't seem that impressive, just fast double-bass pedals (not that fast compared to other bands, though).

Does anyone appreciate the earlier generation of underground metal? Groups like Darkthrone, At the Gates, Bathory, Candlemass, Summoning, Burzum, Emperor, Morbid Angel, Dissection, Immortal, Suffocation, Dark Tranquillity, Slayer etc? I can't tolerate the newer bands, but I still appreciate the foundational works of the genre and noticed no one had mentioned them.

Stupid comment is stupid. Born of Osiris doesn't sound like Pantera. Fail.

Dangerdave, that is my favorite Born of Osiris song (well, it's tied with Bow Down) :D

Fuck yeah dude.  Every single one of those bands are legit.  Emperor is probably my favorite black metal band.  And it's not too often I see someone who appreciates Dissection. "Storm of the Light's Bane" is such a killer album.

The emo vocals are pretty

The emo vocals are pretty wretched. When you hear those whiny, off-key moans it's a red flag that you're listening to shitty new-school pseudo metal. Clean vocals have been done well though, especially by older bands(back in the pre-Autotune days when it was actually expected that a singer knew how to hit specific notes, not just alternate between whining and vomiting on the mic).

Iron Maiden, Dio, Candlemass, Root, Blind Guardian, Solitude Aeturnus, Neurosis, the first few Manowar albums, Danzig, etc pulled it off by making their vocals sound powerful, commanding and epic. Even the guy from Anthrax had a big, soaring voice that really dominated their music.

There have been some good bands listed in here, though I would hardly call iwrestledabearonce "metal," compared to some kickass band like Mastodon. That aside, OP, are you trying to actually start a Western-funded metal club? Or, just a place to talk about metal? I think a metal club would be awesome.

No.

As For The Dead played a house show in the letter ghetto over the summer, but that's the only thing I can think of, haha.

The Nightlight had a metal show a while back (Pelican, Wolves in the Throne Room, and Tombs), but I don't know if we've had much metalcore/deathcore up here in a long time.

I always end up going to Seattle/Tacoma for metalcore/deathcore shows.

(It's Whitechapel, btw ;D)

There have been some good bands listed in here, though I would hardly call iwrestledabearonce "metal," compared to some kickass band like Mastodon. That aside, OP, are you trying to actually start a Western-funded metal club? Or, just a place to talk about metal? I think a metal club would be awesome.

I'm not really sure as of yet, once that enough people would want it and that it would actually have a function then I will try to make it a real group that might meet like once a week, bi-weekly, whatever we figure out later. I just learned that at one point there was a hardcore and metal club but I had never seen anything about it so maybe it is now defunct. I'll get into contact of its president sometime. I guess for the money that we get I could get some stickers made, dunno. I think that an actual club would do alot more than an internet forum where logic does not need to apply (see monkey poo slinging contest).

ha well okay im not going to

ha well okay im not going to waste my time arguing then. but seriously, pantera? theyre big angry dirts from the 90s. the guy yells. its awful. dimebag was an amazing guitarist, but they are terrible.

also, whoever commented on how Born of Osiris sucks is completely retarded. just because your pea sized brain cant handle the intensity of music other than 4/4....

BOO and BTBAM are on the same scale. however, the new BOO album is not very good at all compared to their other one.

also, the human abstract (again, only their first album) is very talented. the vocalist is a whiney fag but if you get passed that, the music is INCREDIBLE. there is no arguing there.  my point is that i follow music with talent, rather than mainstream radio or just cuz i think its brutal. find music with something in common.

The difference between BOO

The difference between BOO and BTBAM though is that, while both are comprised of talented musicians, the dudes in BTBAM are fantastic songwriters.  BOO is just a bunch of dudes orgasming over how fast they can play.  If you just want to listen to that, listen to Origin instead.  Those guys are better musicians and songwriters then BOO.

Hey I'm REALLY into metalcore and deathcore (August Burns Red to Whitechappel). Are there any venues that host bands like this, nearby?

Hey my cousin is the vocalist for As For The Dead ;) and also the guitarist for Idols.

Sooo I'm basically stuck to shows at Portland when I go home to Vancouver over breaks? Welp. I guess The Roseland isn't too terrible.

Dude, Satyricon in Portland always puts on rad metal shows.  When I visited my friend down there, we saw Skeletonwitch and Trap Them.

And Roseland is great as well.  Saw Cannibal Corpse and Behemoth there.

People not liking some mediocre band in no way means that they have a pea-sized brain and can't handle the "intensity" of your music. I don't follow this logic, please explain?
