What are peoples' opinions on minoring in a language?? I'm doing a double major already, and I was interested in possibly doing Greek minor, and its only about 6 courses. Im majoring in journalism and political science, would a greek minor be too disconnected of a subject for my majors? What are the benefits of a language minor?

Thanks for any information/thoughts anyone has!

i majored in math and minored

i majored in math and minored in Spanish...the best thing I could have done for myself.  It was great because it gave me a bit of a break and a reason not to take 4 400 level math classes at once.  It is also nice being able to speak to others in another language.  I am now finishing my master's in teaching and being able to communicate with parents that don't speak English is awesome for me and a great selling point when looking for a job.  Not sure what a Greek minor would do besides bring you the enjoyment of learning a new language and culture, but I think learning a new language is enough of a reward.  Basically, if you have the time and would like to be more like the rest of the world (i.e. at LEAST bilingual), minoring in a language is a great idea.

Hi there! I considered

Hi there! I considered completing my Greek minor, but unfortunately have more pertinent classes to take for my major. If graduating "on time" isn't a concern to you, go for it! Diane Johnson and Byron Stayskal are both wonderful professors with great enthusiasm for the Ancient Greek language.

I'm pre-health and use a lot of what I learned in Greek to take apart words and find the meaning. It's not terribly necessary, but if you've a strong interest, it's definitely worth it. Translating ancient text feels great once you get the hang of it! :)

Having a foreign language

Having a foreign language major/minor can never be a bad thing. When you're out in the 'real' world and you're applying for jobs it's something you can put on there; and while you may never need to use the language, employers will see that you had the sticktoitiveness enough to learn a language and that you might just bring that quality to the job

Structuring your entire

Structuring your entire academic career on classes that compliment each other is pretty useless. Obviously, it's important to be smart and efficient in the classes you take (if you don't want to be in college forever and pay a bunch of money, anyway), but that idea shouldn't keep you from learning something you're interested in. Those classes exist for the exact reason of student interest, if you think about it. Nobody will look at your minor and say "this is crap, it has nothing to do with political science!"

So, in short, go for it. College is an awesome opportunity to broaden your horizons and learn things you might otherwise never learn, so don't pass that up just because you think for some reason that you're only allowed to take classes that are "connected" to your major.

go for it

Personally, I'd say go with a more common language, like spanish or chinese, just because they are really going to open doors for you.  In journalism especially--spanish language media is actually GROWING instead of declining.  But if greek is your passion, go for it.  it certainly won't CLOSE any doors for you.  I'd talk to your academic advisors though.  They can really help you figure this kind of thing out.  If you're interested in spanish language media talk to Carolyn Nielson in the j dept.  She studies this.  =]  Good luck making your descision.
