I am having a very difficult time trying to figure out who is a good professor to take Chem 122 and Bio. 204 with.. help plz ><

Should I take my Chem 122 with Anthony-Cahill, Spencer or Smirnov, Sergey? If I do take it with Smirnov, Sergey, any recommendation to do good in that class?

Also, How hard is it to get an A in Bio 204? What do you focus on in this class? Would it be absolutely insane to do chem and bio at the same time along with psy?

Thanks!!

I took 126 with Cahill and it

I took 126 with Cahill and it was by far the most difficult class I've ever had in my life. However, he's a really cool guy and I can't really say how 122 will go.

Bio 204 was AWESOME though! It's not difficult at all. In fact, I hardly went to class and still got an A.

What is your intended major?

Biol 204 is a pretty easy class. Did you take biology in high school at all? I took AP Biology in high school and what we covered in Biol 204 didn't even go in as much depth as AP Bio. But even without that background, it is definitely do-able to take Chem 122 and Biol 204 and still get an A in biology. It's not like high school where you only take either biology or chemistry or physics. Depending on your major, you might take all of the above in one quarter.

Regarding professors, I had Cahill for a higher level chem class and he was a good teacher. I haven't had Smirnov at all though. I think I've heard that Cahill is tough in gen chem. but if you are going to be a science major, you'll be glad to have a good base.

Thanks for the advice! Yeha I

Thanks for the advice! Yeha I have taken the hardest Bio class in my school. Unfortunately, my school was too poor for AP classes, we only had 2 in fact. Do you guys think it is duable to take psy 101, chem 122, bio 204, eng 101, and music 271?

I took Smirnov for 121, and

I took Smirnov for 121, and I'm taking 122 with Gammon right now.

Everyone who took my 121 class HATED Smirnov. He's not a bad person, just his accent makes it really hard to understand him, and he doesn't do a very good job of explaining himself. I have heard, however, that this is only a problem in the lower division courses, and that he's really good for bio-chem related things (this happens to be his field of study).

As far as taking Chem 121 and Bio 204 together, it's doable. I took Chem 121, Bio 204, Math 124, and CS 102 (which is kind of like negative credits) all in a quarter, so 17 credits. It was really damn hard, but  I was able to manage an A- in Chem 121 and Bio 204. However, unless you have a strong inclination and talent for the sciences, I would avoid taking more than 15 credits if you're going to take those two together.

All in one quarter? Anything is doable, as long as you're not planning on playing Modern Warfare 2 all day every day like I do.

Are you a freshman? Are you

Are you a freshman? Are you familiar with the science classes here at Western? Unless you're really confident in your ability to do it, I would recommend not taking that many courses all at once, especially if you're a freshman.

I had Cahill for the first

I had Cahill for the first half of the accelerated chem summer sequence.  I liked him--great guy, good professor, tests are tough but fair and he curves grades if it will be beneficial.  He also wants to make sure that everyone gets what he's lecturing, so he'll do extra office hours and review sessions before exams.

As far as loading up on the sciences all at once...if you know how to manage your time, go for it.  However, if you don't know how to juggle 10-20 hours of studying each week with your social/work/gaming life, take only one science at a time.  I didn't take 204 here, but I've taken most of the 100 and a few 200 level psych courses and honestly, they're a cinch.  I think I went to all 6 of my psych classes a total of 20 times combined and still got B's or better. Then again, psych came really naturally to me and I know that not everyone can be logical about the way theories in psych come together.

Basically, I say register for them and take a look at the syllabi.  If it looks like tests are too close together or things are going to require time you don't have, drop a class and take a different one.  It's hard to tell how much a class is going to require without looking at the syllabus.

Bio 204

I highly recomend Carrie Schwarz for Bio 204. She is a wonderful teach and is incredibly helpful! Class has been going really well with her.

21?!

Do you know your major?

21 credits is A LOT. Maybe do Biol, Chem, Eng and Music. Do you know if you need Psych 101? I took 119 with Lena Ericksen for a GUR and she was very amusing! Or maybe do Biol, chem, psych and music. I would just cut off one class (it'll still be a lot) and see which classes you really need to take for your major. How many credits are you doing this fall? If you are taking Chem 121 right now, you have an idea of what the chem class will be like.

I'm not trying to overwhelm you with advice.....

Mark Peyron is the only

Mark Peyron is the only reason I have the grasp I have on Chemistry today.

I highly recomend him both as a good guy and as a good teacher.

I'm taking Chem 121 with

I'm taking Chem 121 with Anthony-Cahill right now. Awesome guy, great lecturer. I'm not sure about 122, but 121 really isn't terribly difficult as long as you do what you're supposed to do (go to lecture, take  notes, do the online HW). He puts up practice exams before each mid-term, which pretty much lays out for you what will be on the test.

.I’m taking Bio 204 right now with Carrie Schwartz and she is amazing! I’m also taking chem. 121 from Cahill and he is also equally amazing! I would recommend them to anyone and I’m planning on taking other classes with them.

I'm in the same boat, I'm a freshman, and I want to get my science credits going, I originally was planning on taking Bio 204, Chem 122, Eng 101, and Phys 121, but something tells me I may have to rethink my schedule.

To the person considering

To the person considering physics, bio, chem, and english all at once: drop at least one of the calculation sciences.  Physics and chem at the same time will burn you out with the sheer amount of homework, especially with the writing you'll have to do in English.

Then again, I've always worked part- to full-time the whole time I've been in college.  Perhaps I'm underestimating how much time you are able to devote to studying.  I just know that I couldn't do Anatomy and Chem and a writing-intensive course at the same time, I don't know how I personally would survive another 5 credits on top of that.  (Granted, most biology classes are not as insane as anatomy.)

I would not recommend taking

I would not recommend taking so many courses in one quarter. I think if you take Chem, Bio and Psy that will be enough. You will also be able to get familiar with the science classes and do good in them.

Disregard naysayers.

If you're motivated enough, there's no reason you can't do those four courses at once.
