About Hamster
I am a super (duper) senior. I am majoring in Spanish with a double major in Russian and French. I transferred from Whatcom Community College where I went part-time for a few years while working. I have lived in Denmark for a year and plan to move back for good in 2010 because I am a dual citizen and there are SOOO many reasons why I'd rather be there than here:
health care, free education - why did I come back here to pay so much? - , MUCH less violent, more environmentally conscious, cleaner - yes, cleaner than Bellingham, if you can believe that - , 5 weeks paid vacation EVERY year, no matter what job you have (even McDonalds!), minimum wage there is about $20 per hour, with it going up about $2 extra if you work past 6pm or on weekends... , beer comes in crates of 30 for about $13 and you get money back for the glass bottles and the plastic crate when you turn it in (reverting into MORE beer money!), because only the Danes have the word "hyggeligt" which has no exact translation into English "cozy" (similar, but does not begin to cover all the meanings of the word), and there won't be Walmart (and the "people" that shop there).
And for the dorks that think Denmark is a communist country, go back to school because Communism is WAY over on one side, Capitalism WAY over on the other side, and where is social democracy: right smack in the middle. The best of both worlds. And as far as 60% tax is concerned, it's staggered, so it's not really that much after all: example: I make $100,000, I do NOT pay 60,000 to taxes. I pay maybe 8% on the first $25,000, then 10% on the next $25,000 and then so on, until the very last tax bracket pays 15% on the very highest of their income. But if you spouse makes less, you can actually transfer some of your pay to them so that neither of you goes into the highest bracket. And at least there you get stuff for your taxes, whereas here I still pay about 25% total (fed/state) and I get a whole lotta nada, except it gets sent to Iraq.
Oh, and the politics there: if 20% of the population votes Independent, that party gets 20% voice in the house, 30% for social democrats: 30% voice... so they all have to work together. Unlike here it's winner takes all and "screw them, they lost, we don't have to do anything the other half of the country wants!"
And Europe's just cooler. Americans are soooo 20th century...
And besides my little rant (see above), I am married to a funny Ukrainian who I met in Denmark, therefore I'm learning Russian (yes, Russian's his first language and Ukrainian was forced upon him in school much like B.C. Canadians made to learn French). He also likes Denmark more (who wouldn't?!). He's a Mechanical Engineer, so he likes everything to be exact... it's kind of annoying actually, but it balances out our relationship (AKA: I'm a slob at home).
Oh, where I came from... um, Leavenworth, WA... yeah, I know, embarrassing, huh? Graduated H.S., took off running and NEVER going back (you know they fly the confederate flag there?) yeah, it sucks growing up there since any city worth mentioning (NOT Wenatchee) is like 3 hours or more away. 5 radios stations: 4 country, one classic rock. Do you have ANY idea what it is like to be made to listen to country music, ALL THE TIME?! They should use that crap at Gitmo.
Anyways, guess that's about it. I could go into more, but I suppose I've done enough of that sort of damage already today.
